Dobsonian:
A
simple, elegant form of an alt-azimuth mount made to carry a Newtonian
reflector was popularized by John Dobson in the late 1970's. In its simplest
form, the Dobsonian mount consists of a box which allows the optical tube
assembly to pivot in altitude, while the box itself is swiveled on a base in
azimuth. The secret of the design is to correctly balance the optical tube and
to use frictional materials which allow it to move easily when nudged but to
stay in position when not. Normally such mounts are moved by hand rather than
motor driven. Their main advantages are low cost, fast easy setup and ability
to make a mount big enough for larger tubes.
The Synta-Scope Dobsonian Newtonian-base models have a "parabolic" primary
mirror to eliminate spherical aberration and a four-arm, secondary-mirror
bracket with fine supports (0.5mm thick), to reduce diffraction spikes and
light loss. In addition, all models include a 2" Cray ford-style focuser with
a 1.25" adapter, allowing the use of either eyepiece size of 2" and 1.25" O.D.
These focusers are manufactured to tight tolerances in order to provide
smooth, no-shift eyepiece adjustment.
TENSION CONTROL HANDLE

The secret of the design is to
correctly balance the optical tube with special designed handles on the base.
The design adds enough friction and tension to allow the tube to move easily
when nudged but to stay in position when not. Users can easily add or reduce
tension by turning on the handle. This feature solves the common balance
problem found on many Dobsonians. Available on all Dobsonian models.

PYREX GLASS ON THE 10"
The Sky-Watcher 10” Dobsonian features a primary mirror made of Pyrex glass.
Because of its very low coefficient of thermal expansion, Pyrex glass is
less affected by changing temperatures. This greatly reduces the cooling
time of a telescope larger than 8” in diameter without using an extra fan.
The great stability of this low expansion glass ensures high quality images.
It is also substantially more resistant to scratching then plate glass.
